BDR (Business Development Representative)

A BDR, or business development representative, is a sales role similar to an SDR, focused on outbound prospecting to generate qualified pipeline, though some companies use the title to distinguish outbound-focused reps from SDRs who handle inbound leads. The exact split between the two titles varies by company.

Why it matters for outbound teams

Whether a company calls this role SDR or BDR, the day-to-day work is largely the same: running outbound sequences, handling replies, and qualifying leads before handoff to an account executive. Understanding which title a company uses matters mostly for org design and comp planning rather than for the actual tools or workflow the role depends on. Both roles rely on the same core loop of sending, tracking replies, and moving qualified leads forward.
