A sequencer is the software used to schedule and send a series of outbound emails, and often other channel touches, to a list of prospects according to a defined sequence and cadence. Smartlead and Instantly are widely used examples of sequencers built for cold email at scale.
Why it matters for outbound teams
The sequencer is the engine that actually sends outbound campaigns, handling scheduling, personalization variables, inbox rotation, and follow-up logic. It is where most outbound teams spend their setup time, but it typically is not built to handle the reply-side work of triaging and routing every response once volume grows. That gap is why many teams pair a sequencer with a separate reply management layer.
